Q. Most memorable Valentine’s Day memory?

A. When I was in elementary someone put chocolate inside my hakwon’s [private lessons outside of school] locker but I still don’t know who did it. Ha ha I just thought about that now! Who could it have been?

A. Um.. I think that I would be a good guy. Because I’m the angel Suho that protects all of you >_<

Q. What’s my most memorable gift?

A. As my high school graduation gift I got an electronic piano. Since it contains a lot of different instrument’s sounds it really helped for studying music. Every time I play the electronic piano and I think about how much my parents think about me, I’m really thankful.

Q. A romantic movie that you like?

A. It’s a movie called ‘Love Actually.’ It’s a movie about the love stories of a lot of people so I thought that each and every scene was very lovely and all of the movie’s OSTs are good, so during Christmas or Valentine’s Day I listen to them often. ^^

Q: A place that I want to go on Valentine’s Day as a date location?

A: Since Valentine’s Day is on February it might be a little cold but I think it’d be really nice to go to the beach. I like the hot summer beach too but I think that walking just the two of us along the winter beach would be a very lovely memory.

Q. If you had to give candy to only one person on White Day?

A. Hahaha I think it would obviously be my mother. Even if I can’t prepare anything for her during other (celebratory) days, I think I should definitely prepare something for her at least during White Day. Hahaha everyone, don’t forget that either! ^^

A. My mother really likes little, cutesy things and when I was younger, I remember during Valentine’s Day when she gave me gold chocolate neatly decorated in a box. ^^ As a reference, that day I only received chocolate from my mother … it’s a memory, not so memorable..

Q. The most amount of chocolate that you have received?

A. There wasn’t a time that I have received a lot at once, but I recall that I always received chocolate that came from the bottom of their hearts ^^

A. Lee Seok Hoon’s ‘The 10 reasons that I love you.’ If you look at the lyrics, similar to the title, it says 10 reasons that he loves that person. And they’re lyrics that anyone can really relate to. Matching senior Lee Seok Hoon’s sweet voice, I think it’s a song that can make you feel the lovely mood.

Q. Are you someone that remembers anniversaries well?

A. I think I am someone who really takes anniversaries into account. Without skipping an anniversary date and giving a small gift or even saying a warm saying, I think that the person is happy ^^ There is no person that doesn’t like seeing that happiness. If you have treated anniversaries carelessly, how about putting a little effort in remembering anniversaries?

A. Of course I had to give it to my parents who are in 0th place! Haha

A. During my elementary school days, my mother and my noona [older sister] told me that on Valentine’s Day the girl gives the guy chocolate so they gave me a heart-shaped chocolate. I was so happy back then that I think I didn’t even eat the chocolate and instead went to school and bragged about it to my friends.

A. I really like romantic movies! ‘As Good As it Gets’ and ‘Something’s Gotta Give’ both are movies that star the actor that I really respect Jack Nicholson as the lead actor! Both movies are movies that warm your heart during cold winter days, so I recommend that everyone watch it!

A. I think that I will be a good guy! Since I usually like people and am warm hearted when I fall in love I’d probably take care of the person I love sincerely and will treasure her as best as I can!

A. If I had a girlfriend during our anniversary I want to make something like a cake for her.  haven’t ever done it before but seeing people on the internet or around me that have received cake made me really jealous. Even though I’m lacking I want to make a unique cake from the bottom of my heart and give it to her.

Q. A place that I want to go on Valentine’s Day as a date location?

A. I want to go the amusement park the most. Since I was younger I’ve liked amusement parks, on Valentine’s Day I want to go on the rides together, watch festivals and such, wear headbands and also take a stroll too!

After bringing out SHINee, Korean entertainment’s magnate SM Company finally released the new group EXO after 4 years. 2 sub-groups, EXO-K and EXO-M, debuting on the same day, same time, with the same song but in Korean and Chinese, and on different stages in Korea and China, on 9 April. With the large-scaled publicising and the fresh and special way of making their debut, this has attracted the world’s curiosity and anticipation.

EXO’s name comes from the planets outside our solar system EXOPLANET, containing the profound meaning of new stars coming from an unknown world. And the K that is added at the back of EXO means KOREA. EXO-K, which consists of 6 members, have started a series of events, with the aspiration of spreading their music throughout the world.

From December 2012, there was a gradual revelation of member’s photos and teasers. At the turn of 3-4 months this year, after 100 days of warming up, 12 members made their appearance and successfully held their showcase. Until 8 April, both sub-groups sang 《MAMA》in China and Korea, completing their debut show. And on 30 November, EXO won the “Best New Asian Artist Group” at the MAMA awards ceremony held in Hong Kong. The craze that they have received has proved that this new group is currently getting popular within a short period of time.

(I) New stars getting popular within a short period of time

 

On 22 Dec 2011, EXO’s member KAI’s first photo and teaser officially announced the prologue to the group’s debut. His powerful dance moves and chiseled face left a deep impression on others. Later, with the revelation of Chinese members LUHAN and TAO, Chinese fans have obviously increased their anticipation of the fresh group. After 100 days of warming up, after going through a round of modeling photos, teasers, MV teasers, EXO has finally opened their mysterious veil in front of the fans on 31 March 2012. The next day, 1 April, a grand debut conference was presented authentically in front of the Chinese fans… …

If you weren’t there at the conference in person, you wouldn’t know how ‘terrifying’ the level of popularity this new group of stars have. No need to talk about showcase tickets being crazily ‘snatched’, fans have flocked to the airport to welcome them on that day, and also being really early and waiting outside the conference venue, just to get a glimpse of their idols. With 《History》 being played, Chinese and Korean sub-groups EXO-K and EXO-M and its 12 members will take the stage alternatively. Great hits and hot dance moves have brought them a wonderful performance, which attracted more fans screaming, singing in unison, confirming EXO’s high popularity.

On 9 April, EXO’s first album 《MAMA》 was officially released. After one month, 《MAMA》Korean version sold 71,473 copies, Chinese version sold 38,807 copies, and the total sales for the album in one month was 11,280 copies. In overall downturn conditions of music, for EXO a new group being newly debut and able to hit the record sales of more than 100,000 copies is quite a rare thing. Developing in Korea, EXO-K’s Korean version of 《MAMA》have been ranked #1 on a Korean Album Sales Chart for April.  This shows that the Korean fans have been paying a lot of attention to this group.

On 18 September, during the period when EXO-M attended the rookie ceremony, EXO-K went to cheer them on and attended the Sina Live Chat. Outside the building and the carpark was filled with waiting fans, and the members’ appearance has led to a commotion, until the staff was called in to maintain the order. EXO-K’s web chat was filled with a joyful atmosphere till the end, members did aegyo, revealed secrets etc, making it a topic of interest amongst fans. EXO-K has used this opportunity to gather another group of fans.

Gradually coming to the end of the year, EXO clearly is the chosen one for winners of rookie awards for various huge award ceremonies. On 30 November at MAMA awards ceremony, EXO was awarded with “Best New Asian Artist Group” without suspense. And debuting for more than half a year, the craze that they have triggered, the advertising endorsements that they have received, the uproar and confrontation of fans when they make appearance, are unable to explain their popularity. It seems like they aren’t in a rookie period, but have grown to more of a mature idol group in a short time.

 

- Sina Entertainment (Sina Ent): The long period of being a trainee has ended. What were your thoughts being the first time performing onstage?

SUHO: After the end of the showcase, it doesn’t feel like “It’s completed”, but more of “This is the start”. I don’t know about how the other members think of it, but for myself, I wasn’t really pleased with the first stage performance. Next time, we will work harder to present a more outstanding performance.

 

- Sina Ent: After debuting this year in April, you all are always busy. Is there a difference on the thinking of “celebrity life” before debut and now?

CHANYEOL: I was always nervous before our debut. But after going onstage, it feels happier right now.

SUHO: I don’t want to compete with other groups, instead to just work harder, to strive to share the stage with many respectable singers and our seniors.

(II) The reason of being suddenly popular isn’t resolved

Just like the song lyrics “No one can casually become successful”, the following is a rough analysis on why EXO’s became suddenly popular:

Number 1: The company’s planned packaging is foundation. Known as a ‘Star Factory’, SM has ample experience in making artistes. Throughout SM company’s works, from H.O.T, Shinhwa, TVXQ!, Super Junior to SHINee, it seems that they have never failed. EXO being prepared as a new group to be released in the fourth year have intermingled with SM company’s rhythm, making the fans save their anticipation. Other than teasers and quality of the album, you could completely see SM’s intention. Famous Taiwan songwriter Tina Wang wrote this on Weibo, saying “You can only see a new group’s success once in a few years, which is a low probability. I think when record companies are really diligently working, it will be very lucky! While helping EXO-M to fill in 《MAMA》’s lyrics, I could clearly feel that SM company’s accuracy in the pre-production. This made others who participated in the collaboration, clearly understands the group’s position and direction. Even being changed again and again, it still won’t be sloppy, therefore today’s results aren’t accidental.

Number 2: Learning from seniors’ experience. SM company being a mature entertainment production line, its artistes have already have a set of survival experience in the entertainment industry. And you could say that the meaning of EXO’s debut and popularity is like standing on the shoulders of a giant - - SM company recruited many idols, not knowing that they have cultivated a family. Hence every new group that is released will be able to receive a widespread of concern before their debut. Regarding how they will further develop smoothly after today, the seniors have given EXO many suggestions. During the debut conference in in Beijing, this same question was asked. EXO’s member BAEKHYUN frankly said that: “Many seniors have given us multiple advice. The one that left the deepest impression was Senior Leeteuk, and he said ‘Though the human heart may change at any time, there mustn’t be an agreement between the members. You must encourage one other, so that the group will be able to last longer.’”

Number 3: Cute looks, great genre, members sure know how to please the fans. To the young fans, there will always be an EXO member’s image that will suit you. Not only is CHANYEOL and SEHUN taking on the role of imaging, there is still KAI’s sexy type. While it is very popular to act cute, D.O.’s big eyes are definitely a tool for cuteness. And BAEKHYUN’s innocence and leader SUHO’s calm and collected character has their own ‘market’. Of course M’s leader KRIS, LUHAN etc are the most discussed members amongst the fans. Talking about fans that are interested in only music, EXO’s songs are easily someone’s cup of tea. You can say that their song genre have bid goodbye to Super Junior “SJ FUNKY” style and SHINee and has its own unique genre after being in the experience field, making this the most perfect regression for SMPOP. To those who are familiar, this has a thick retro atmosphere. To those strangers, this is also not hard on the taste. At the same time, EXO’s leader singers are all amazing. When singing 《MAMA》, it immediately starts with a treble, which really tests the singing proficiency. D.O. relied on his strong voice to ‘hold’ onto the whole song. As for how to allow the fans to remember them, EXO members each have their own way. There is one that would capture your heart with his smile, one that would stick his tongue to be cute, one that has a clean senior style, one that would be like a little white rabbit and one that takes a sexy and seductive route. When EXO-K did their Sina Live Chat, because of their difference in languages, they often go into the situation of NG. Thanks to the members for creating the atmosphere. No wonder fans will tease them of knowing how to please the fans.

Number 4: Both China and Korea developing strategies at the same time. With Chinese members, they are able to spur the groups to become popular, which is also SM’s way of allowing groups to become rapidly popular. It has been like this since the beginning with Super Junior’s Han Geng to f(x)’s Victoria. With the presence of the Chinese members, Chinese fans will naturally pay more attention them. After EXO has chosen the tactic of same time but different place for development, it will decrease the lagging time between both groups. Whether you are talking about the anticipation for the group’s unification on stage, regardless of any aspect, it will become a discussion topic for the EXO fans.

 

- Sina Ent: Comparing to the time when you all made your debut and now, what is the biggest improvement and change?

SUHO: When we had our interview during a showcase, at that time it feels very difficult to talk in front of the public. We’ve met many seniors during events and after communicating with them, we can naturally express our thoughts now. It’s also the same for our performances. Before that, we were nervous, but now after repetitive practices and various experiences, we can perform more perfectly.

CHANYEOL: Now we’ve learnt to look at the camera during music programs. Initially when we were doing events with our seniors from SHINee, they told us that the way of finding the camera is very important. And also, there would be a gradual increase in tacit between the members’ co-operation. Because of always being with the members of EXO-K, we have become more familiar with each other.

BAEKHYUN: When we first debuted, we were nervous. But now we are more confident with singing, dancing and performing. We are still paying attention to our own image. Last time we would casually wear sports clothing to go out, but after debuting, even if we are going somewhere nearby, we will still dress up.

D.O.: There is an improvement in all the aspects, there is a greater improvement in terms of language.  While introducing our debut single on our debut stage (SBS 《The Music Trend》), I said “Outstanding” instead of “Majestic”. I was so nervous that my mind was blanked out at that time because whatever was prepared was not said properly. Luckily our leader helped me to continue, so that I could overcome that obstacle. Now whenever there are live programmes, I will certainly be well-prepared.

KAI: There is also an improvement in “sleep”. No matter where we are, we can immediately fall asleep. (Laughs)

SEHUN: Because I am youngest in the group, so our brothers will allow me to aegyo.  Originally I won’t normally aegyo but now, no matter what program we are on, they will let me play the cute role. So I think that there is a great improvement in aegyo for myself. (Laughs) Also when we just debuted, I don’t remember what I did when we were performing, but now I am working very hard to show the happy and confident side of me.

 

- Sina Ent: Being in front of your seniors and TV stations, will you all become very cautious?

CHANYEOL: We always bow 90 degrees. During our trainee times, we heard from others that greetings are very important, so we always initiate our greetings towards our seniors.

(III)  Being twins with EXO-M

Because of this catchphrase “We are one” has formed a twin relationship between EXO-K and EXO-M. When you mention EXO-K, you can’t avoid talking about EXO-M, because these two sub-groups are both the same when returning to their roots. No one will stand alone because they are unable to break away from each other.

Other than both sub-groups having their own events, there are no distinct boundaries when 12 members from groups, K and M, come together. The members’ private relations are often a talk with great enthusiasm amongst the fans. While having the interview consecutively, members have revealed interesting things from their daily lives. Talking about occupying the Asian market, both EXO-K and EXO-M are in a win- win situation of mutual aid with no competition. They are both facing different markets to develop, and when they come together, they have the effectiveness of 1+1>2. Regarding able to be popular in China, even members of EXO-K humbly believe that it is because of the few Chinese members in EXO-M. Talking about the difference between both groups, EXO-K’s members feel that the only difference is the language.

Apart from mutual assistance, both groups’ members have relied on each other. To them, who just started living a life of fame, those hardships and pressure are unimaginable by just anyone. But recently, a few members that were photographed in the airport by the fans warmed people’s hearts. To EXO, whenever the airport is crowded, members will appear hands on each other’s shoulder, forming a small train, seemingly give each other warmth and support.

 

- Sina Ent: After hearing EXO-K and EXO-M will be debuting in China and Korea at the same time, what were your thoughts?

CHANYEOL: I was very happy. Because able to be with friends and with EXO’s name to debut together, I am really happy. Also, this kind of new kind of grouping allows us to feel challenged.

BAEKHYUN: We were always practising, only at the last minutes did we hear that our company will be using this way to debut.

 

- Sina Ent: Not only is EXO-K and EXO-M a group, they could be a competitor overseas.

KAI: I don’t think we are competitors. When EXO-K and EXO-M comes together and promote out music worldwide, then will we shine.

 

- Sina Ent: What kind of charm does the Chinese fans like EXO-K for?

SUHO: I think it’s because of the popularity of the EXO-M members that influenced us.

 

- Sina Ent: What’s different between EXO-K and EXO-M

BAEKHYUN: Languages?

CHANYEOL: The voices are different. Members of EXO-K’s voice are mostly bass while EXO-M’s voices are clearer. Singing the same songs with different voices gives others a different feeling.

Reaching not even a year after their debut, EXO-K’s future road is still very long. Regarding each other’s relationship, they will use family meeting as a form of co-ordination. And at the same time, there is no such thing as being senior or junior. In the future road of performing arts, the members want to try acting, variety entertainment and even song writing are their goals that they expect to achieve. After 10 years, EXO’s members dreams for a wonderful world tour. What’s even cuter is SEHUN’s wish: At that time, we will charter a flight…

- Sina Ent: You all have just finished your music event. What are you all busy with recently?

CHANYEOL: We are preparing our album and exercising and practising with the other members at the same time. When we are not in China doing any events, we will normally gather at the practice room. Although the places for the events are different, the stage performance is still the same. So we will chat about our songs, EXO-M’s members and also learn mandarin.

- Sina Ent: In EXO-K, whose mandarin is the best?

EXO-K: That should be brother SUHO.

SUHO: Since there are Chinese members in EXO-M, I’m not counted as the best. I am only working hard to learn mandarin.

- Sina Ent: How do you boost co-operation and feelings amongst the members?

EXO-K: We will hold “family meetings”.

BAEKHYUN: Last time, we hold a family meeting together once a week. Now we are always together, so our conversation time would be longer.

SEHUN: There wouldn’t be a dull moment when I’m with the other members.

 

- Sina Ent: Will you all always stay in the dormitory? Are the household chores being divided? Are there any interesting things that happened in the dormitory that you can share it with everyone?

EXO-K: Each and every one of us has our own house chores. Every chore is done with roommates forming into a group, which then will be fairly completed.

KAI: We will use scissors, paper, stone to decide who would do the dishes.

CHANYEOL: At first it’s always our leader SUHO who keeps losing. But recently, our youngest member SEHUN keeps losing.

D.O.: Because recently our youngest member is always losing, so we don’t play scissors, paper, stone anymore, instead we do the household chores on our own.

BAEKHYUN: In EXO-K, there is no such thing as being senior or junior. Sometimes, we are like a family or very good friends.

- Sina Ent: From when did you know notice that you all are getting more and more popular?

SUHO: We can often feel it at the airport. The first time when we went to China, there were many fans at the airport to welcome us. For the second and third time, there were even more fans, making me feel very shocked.


- Sina Ent: You all are very popular in China. What is the difference between Chinese and Korean fans?

CHANYEOL: Regardless of which country we go to, the fans are cheering for us. They are also liking us, supporting us.

- Sina Ent: Are there any special banners created by the Chinese fans?

BAEKHYUN: Spelling my name wrongly. At first, I was suspecting if someone has made a mistake, but after that, I knew it was from the Chinese fans. I felt that our Chinese fans are very cute.

CHANYEOL: The times when the Chinese fans are singing Korean songs with us were very touching. Next time we will repay them with better music.


- Sina Ent: Are there any planned performances or stages?

BAEKHYUN: If there is a chance, of course we would like to try challenging things. But currently we hope there would be a greater to our music.


- Sina Ent: Group dancing on stage has becoming more challenging. Everyone’s chance of performing and singing will decrease. Will you feel pitiful?

CHANYEOL: The charms that EXO-K must demonstrate in the future will be more. So we must slowly release more charms.

KAI: Because we are still young and capable, so I believe our performance will get better next time. Recently BAEKHYUN and D.O. danced in a commercial. The other members also hope to perform better in other areas.

- Sina Ent: Which praise left the deepest impression for you all?

SUHO: The many suggestions that our seniors have given us. Especially Super Junior’s Donghae said “After seeing EXO-K’s and EXO-M’s stage, I think when EXO’s name goes onstage, it would become the most dazzling.”

- Sina Ent: What’s your feeling on joining the SM family in concert?

CHANYEOL: We’ve seen SM family’s concert during our trainee days. At that time, all we thought of was to quickly make our debut, so that we can share the stage together with our seniors. After our debut, we were very honoured to attend the SM Town concert held in LA, America. The feeling of sharing the stage together with our seniors was really good. Our seniors have also given us many suggestions. We were really happy after performing together.

- Sina Ent: What’s the special point of SM? What traditions do they have?

KAI: SM Entertainment is very particular with manners, like 

CHANYEOL: We have continued SM company’s tradition, which is known as SMP(SM MUSIC PERFORMANCE)’s theme song 《MAMA》 is our company’s tradition.

KAI: Before our debut, we have seen so many repeated dance practices from our seniors.


- Sina Ent: Are you all anticipating a Rookie Award from the year-end award ceremony?

SUHO: The Rookie Award is a once in a lifetime award. Actually after 4 months of our debut, we’ve already worked really hard for the Rookie of the Year award. But for this one year, the support that was given to EXO-K by the fans was more valuable than the Rookie Award. But if we’re lucky enough to be awarded… Haha

- Sina Ent: What event goals does EXO-K have?

KAI: I’ve never thought about goals, just want to work harder to complete what we should do.

SEHUN: To continue progressing, slowly finding EXO-K’s true colours is our goal.

CHANYEOL: There are still a lot of charms that EXO-K must release, so hopefully we can slowly show our colours.

- Sina Ent: In the 10 years, what will EXO-K be like?

SEHUN: All the EXO members will be together for a world tour. Sitting on a private jet?

D.O.: Just like the popular Japanese group, Arashi, I wish we are still able to be together after 10 years. Hopefully we will always be together.

SUHO: EXO advocates “dedication” more compared to “accept”, so hopefully our members are able to go to more places to contribute to the society.

KAI: After 10 years, hopefully our members will become stronger artistes, and hoping that EXO-K will keep flourishing for a long time.

CHANYEOL: Just like the other members, I wish that after 10 years, 20 years, we are still able to be together. Personally, I want to learn song writing, creating many suitable concert songs and widely circulated songs for EXO.

BAEKHYUN: Hopefully I’m able to sing, act etc in the other areas to have a more outstanding performance, becoming a versatile artiste.
